PETER VAN NUYS, Of Counsel to Becker, Glynn, Melamed & Muffly LLP, is a member of the firm's estate planning and tax groups. His experience includes U.S. and multinational tax and estate planning for nonresident aliens, resident aliens and U.S. citizens, both resident and nonresident, including: advice on representing off-shore entities; FIRPTA issues; controlled foreign corporations; passive foreign investment companies; mergers and acquisitions; tax-free rollovers; repatriation of foreign trusts; expatriate tax and estate planning; estate and future care planning for families with disabled family members; elder law; tax audits, appeals and litigation; Surrogate Court litigation; trust and estate administration; and the formation and operation of tax-exempt charitable organizations.
Mr. Van Nuys has represented the trust department of a bank and has advised banks on operating procedures for their trust and estate departments, including drafting a procedure manual for administration of supplemental needs trusts. He has lectured to foreign banks on a variety of topics, including U.S. income, estate and gift tax issues affecting nonresident aliens and nonresident U.S. citizens, changes in the U.S. laws relating to foreign trusts and the use of offshore trusts and corporations and has appeared in federal court litigation as an expert witness on international tax planning. He has lectured throughout eastern New York State on estate and future care planning for families with disabled family members.
Mr. Van Nuys joined Becker, Glynn, Melamed & Muffly LLP as a partner in 1991. He is an officer and director of Disabled and Alone/Life Services For The Handicapped, Inc.
Education
Mr. Van Nuys received a B.A. from Harvard University in 1961, a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1964 and an LL.M. (Taxation) from New York University School of Law in 1970. He also received a certificate in Foreign and Comparative Law in 1967 from the Parker School of Foreign and Comparative Law at Columbia University.

Mr. Van Nuys is a member of the American Bar Association (Sections of Taxation and Real Property, Probate and Trust Law), and the New York State Bar Association (Tax, Trusts and Estates and Elder law sections).
